On Mother’s Day, May 13, 1995, 117 people gathered in the multipurpose room of Mountainview Elementary School on Old Route 66, halfway between Edgewood and Moriarty, NM. That day the room had a new purpose—to host the first service of an Episcopal church in the East Mountains, the Church of the Holy Cross. Under the leadership of the founding vicar, the Rev. Adams (Ads) Lovekin, PhD, and his wife, Ann Lovekin, the young mission church continued to meet at the school for the next five years.
The church soon purchased five acres of land in Edgewood, with the current building opening its doors for worship and ministry in 2000. In the intervening years, Holy Cross achieved parish status within the Episcopal Diocese of the Rio Grande, and four rectors/Vicars have served the congregation since the retirement of Father Ads.
The message of Holy Cross remains simple and to the point: love God and love your neighbor as yourself. We seek to care for one another and to share a church life that helps us extend the love of Christ into the world around us. Wherever you are in your journey of faith, the Episcopal Church welcomes you!
